What is Krav Maga?

Krav Maga is a practical and effective self-defense system developed for real-world situations. Designed to be instinctive, aggressive, and adaptable, it teaches individuals to respond swiftly to threats, using natural movements and techniques drawn from boxing, wrestling, judo, and street fighting. Krav Maga is not just about learning how to fight—it’s about surviving, protecting oneself and others, and developing the confidence to walk through the world unafraid.

Unlike traditional martial arts, Krav Maga prioritizes efficiency over formality. There are no katas, rituals, or unnecessary movements—just direct, explosive and agressive responses to threats. Whether facing an armed attacker, multiple assailants, or an unpredictable confrontation, Krav Maga equips practitioners with the skills to react decisively and neutralize dangers as quickly as possible.

The Origins of Krav Maga – Honoring Imi Lichtenfeld

Krav Maga was founded by Imi Lichtenfeld (1910–1998), a man who understood that survival depends not only on skill but also on adaptability. Born in Bratislava, Czechoslovakia, Imi grew up training in boxing, wrestling, and gymnastics under his father, Samuel Lichtenfeld, a respected police officer and self-defense instructor. During the 1930s, as anti-Semitic violence spread across Europe, Imi and his peers had to fight to protect their communities. These street battles shaped his understanding of real combat: it wasn’t about rules or sportsmanship—it was about survival.

Fleeing Nazi-occupied Europe, Imi eventually reached the land of Israel, where he was recruited by the Haganah, the underground defense force of the Jewish people. He began training soldiers and special units, refining his system into what would later become Krav Maga. His methods were built on instinctive reactions, aggression, and simplicity—allowing soldiers to learn combat skills quickly and apply them effectively under extreme stress.

After Israel’s independence in 1948, Imi became the Chief Instructor for Physical Fitness and Krav Maga in the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF). He spent years perfecting the system, ensuring it was effective for both military personnel and civilians. In the 1970s, he adapted Krav Maga for everyday people, making it accessible to anyone seeking self-defense skills. His philosophy was clear: "So that one may walk in peace."

Imi’s legacy lives on in every Krav Maga practitioner today. His system continues to evolve, remaining one of the most effective self-defense methods in the world. At ID Krav Maga, we honor his teachings by staying true to the essence of Krav Maga—training hard, thinking smart, and always being prepared for the unexpected.
